OLD BOYS, RAMBLERS WIN COMPETITIONS

HOCKEY

THE finals of the two men’s hockey competitions were played at Maungakaramea and Kensington Park on Saturday. At Maungakaramea, Old Boys A defeated Maungakaramea B—3 in the section play-off of the main competition.

At Kensington Park, both the final and the semi-final of the auxiliary competition were played. The final at Maungakaramea between ’Karamea and Old Boys A produced fast, exciting hockey, which kept spectators on their toes throughout. Territorially, the game was even, but spectacular forward rushes by the Old Boys’ forwards enabled them to pile up eight goals against their opponents' three. Largely responsible for this was the combination of the three inside forwards, R. Mullins at centre. R. Fyfe on the right and B. Reid on the left, their short passing tactics keeping the defence guessing. R. Mullins netted six goals, R. Fyfe one and B. Reid scored beautifully from a reverse stick shot.

Four games were played against Dargaville teams, two at Whangarei and two at Dargaville. At Whangarei, Dargaville men 5 (W. Weir 3, B. Young 2) beat Maungatapere men 2 <P. Jenkins, I. Price). Dargaville had better finish in the circle and good half backing. The ladies’ game resulted: Whangarei 2 (Misses P. Kernohan, J. Hay). Northern V/airoa 2 (Misses N. Martin, R. Martin).

At Dargaville, Rovers A defeated Dargaville by 3 goals to 2. The game was even territorially, but Rovers had better forward combination and used their wings to good advantage. V. Penney, Rovers' fullback, kept tiie opposing forwards puzzled, and R. Archibald was safe in goal, making an exceptional save just before the final whistle.

Maungakaramea played consistently and worked some really fine forward movements, with C. Bint as the pivot. F. Bint played safely on defence. AUXILIARY ROUND In the semi-final. Mangapai defeated High School 7—l and Ramblers beat Springfield 3—2. Mangapai had an easy win over a depleted School team, which was forced to play a defensive game throughout. R. Price (4), C. FinlaysOn, L. Cotton and S. Ferris were the scorers for Mangapai, while E. Marr netted for School.

The Whangarei ladies’ team was defeated by Northern Wairoa, 3—2. after an even battle. Two More Ladies 7 Reps. Two further Northland hockey players have been chosen for the Auckland provincial ladies’ representative team which is participating in the New Zealand ladies’ tournament at Wellington. They arc Mrs Z. Passel and Miss J. Danks. both from Northern Wairoa. This bring the number of Northland players chosen up to 12 out of the 13 which took part in the trials at Whangarei recently and speaks for itself on the standard of Northland ladies’ hockey. Ramblers 3 (D. HannUm, H. Primmer, C. Jackson) had the better of Springfield 2 (11. Drat Tin).

Both sides fought hard. Both sets ul fullbacks were sound, but among the forwards play was mostly confined to individual runs. THE PLAY-OFF

The play-ufl' between Mangapai and Ramblers was even throughout and when the final whistle went the score was 2-all. Extra time was played and. after 20 minutes, Ramblers netted the deciding goal.

In the first spell, although there were many shots at goal, neither side could reach the net.

Mangapai opened the score early in the second spell, R. Price netting from a penalty corner. Shortly after, C. Jackson scored for Ramblers, also from a corner.

C. Holland scored Mangapai’s second goal from a quick follow in on a shot at goal. Right on time, however, H. Primmer equalised for Ramblers. and extra time was decided on.

After 20 minutes of even play, Jackson scored from a melee in the circle, thus giving the honours to Ramblers.
