£200,000 Fire At Newcastle, NSW
(Rec. 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Damage estimated at £200,000 was caused by a fire which destroyed a large three-storey modern brick warehouse in the heart of Newcastle at 0 a.m. today. The building housed W. E. Bramble's bulk store, which contained petrol, wool and tallow!
Many families are badly hit as one entire floor contained stored furniture.
Another floor was occupied by D. Mitchell and Company, one of the largest wholesale grocery manufacturers in New South Wales.
Three terrific explosions at 10minute intervals just before 4 o'clock wakened the entire population of Newcastle.
Many thought the oil tanks had exploded. Many thousands turned out in night attire to watch the blaze.
Firemen achieved a miraculous save when they prevented Newcastle Stadium, separated from Bramble’s store by a narrow lane, from catching fire. The fire was one of the biggest in Newcastle’s history.
Two firemen were injured by falling timber.
