Demand For Higher Egg Prices
(Rec. 12.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Poultry farmers have told the Prime Minister (Mr Chifley) that unless the j price of eggs is increased to an eco(nomic level they will not be able to supply eggs for export to Britain. Mr Chifley is considering the mat- ’ ter after a protest by the Associated Poultry Farmers of Australia, the pre- , sident of which (Mr B. H. Gosper) i said that if egg prices were not in\creased many poultry farmers would 'go out of business. Eggs are plentiful in New South ; Wales at the top retail price of 2/- a dozen. The Government fixes the maximum i price to producers at 1*79, but farmers claim that increased feed prices .and transport costs have lifted production costs to 2/3 a dozen.
