Dairy Commission Wasting No Time

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The newly-constituted Dairy Products Marketing Commission has got quickly down to business. Its chairman (Mr W. Marshall) announced last night, when it ended its first meeting after two days’ deliberations, that the commission had "taken up the matter of negotiations with the United Kingdom in respect of the sale of butter and cheese for the 1947-43 season.”

Mr Marshall said further that the commission had agreed with the arrangements made for the London discussions and had received a report from the New Zealand delegation in London.

The commission’s views were being communicated to the delegation, with whom the commission was maintaining close contact.

“The commission will proceed with its various functions and responsibilities in accordance with the provisions of the act as early as possible, including the question of an additional payment for last season and the fixing of the price for the current season,” said Mr Marshall.

The .commission had appointed Mr G. Pottinger, at present acting Director of Export Marketing, to be general manager of the commission, subject to the consent of the Public Service Commissioner.

He would for the time being occupy both positions. ' SECRETARY APPOINTED

Mr F. Lingard, at present secretary of the Economic Stabilisation Commission, was appointed secretary subject to the Public Service Commissioner s consent.

It was expected that within a few weeks Mr Lingard would be wholly an officer of the commission. As the commission must function forthwith, consideration of ways and means to enable it to do so occupied a good deal of the first meeting. It was decided, subject to the consent of the Minister of Marketing (Mr Cullen) that until other arrangements could be made the Marketing Department be appointed the agent of the commission for the purchase and sale of butter and cheese intended for export and to regulate and control the distribution of butter and cheese in New Zealand. Mr Marshall said regular meetings of the commission would be held on the first Thursday of each month. It would meet next week. The members of the commission, in addition to Mr Marshall, are Messrs B. C. Ashwin, F. P. Walsh, C. Morgan Williams. A. E. Candy, H. E. Blyde and W. G. Macartney.
