Hungary 'Democrats' Amazed, Terrified

(Rec. 10.30 a.m.) MOSCOW, July 4. The Tass Agency reports from Budapest that the Hungarian “democratic public is profoundly amazed” at the Hungarian High Court commuting death sentences on Hungarians accused of complicity in the anti-republican plot. The court confirmed the death sentence on Dr Georg Donath, former member of Parliament, but commuted to imprisonment for 15 and 10 years respectively the death sentences on General Lajos Veres de Dalnok, “underground commander-in-chief,” and/ General Sandor Andrassi “underground chief of stall'.” The court also commuted the death sentences on three others.

The Hungarian newspaper Szabad Nep declares the court’s decision ‘terrifies democrats anxious about the fate of the nation.”
