Nationalists Lose In Manchuria
(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) NANKING, June 16. A qualified militai'y observer said today that recent Communist successes in Manchuria are causing Government forces to face the worst threat of entire civil war. The Nationalist salient in Manchuria has been cut into three isolated parts, reducing the total area in Nationalist hands by half. Today’s military map shows that Government-held territory in Manchuria is split into the Changchun-Kirin-Tehwei triangle, the Mukden-Kaping-Yingkow-Shanghaikwan rectangle, and the small Szepingkai pocket lying in between. Szepingkai is regarded by both Nationalists and Communists as the key strategic area. The Communists hurled a strong mobile fifth column of plain clothes saboteurs into Szepingkai suburbs, but Government forces, in stiff fighting. held firm and are reported to have captured 2000 Reds.
