Old Boys Ahead In Whangarei Hockey
OLD BOYS took the lead in the men’s A section competition as "a result of games staged by the Whangarei Hockey Association at Kensington Park on Saturday.
The two main rivals to Old Boys— Mangapai and Ramblers—were both defeated, Mangapai by Springfield and Ramblers by Old Boys. Old Boys have now a clear-cut lead with 13 points, while Mangapai has 11 and Ramblers 10. There was little outstanding hockey seen, largely as a result of the muddy condition of the grounds. The biggest surprise of the day was Mangapai's s—l defeat by Springfield. Springfield seemed to have regained their old form and in the second half had a decided advantage.
Mangapni was unfortunate to lose L- Cotton, its centre-forward, as a result of an injury to his elbow. The Springfield forward line went well, with J. Palmer to the fore, netting twice. Cther scorers were 'J'. Graham, S. Carter and D. Carter. Roy Price scored for Mangapni. The Old Boys-Ramblers game showed Old Boys' superior stickwork.
The score was Old Boys 3 <R. Pyle 2. C. Hughes). Ramblers 1 (C. Jackson).
Old Boys put up a solid defence against the Ramblers’ forward line who seemed unable to attain their usual standard.
Rovers moved another step up the ladder in defeating High School 5—4 Rovers played an excellent game and showed considerable improvement.
High School also put up a solid display and as the score indicates there was little to choose between either side.
Scorers were: Rovers, N. Johnson 2 A. Kelly, L. Whisker, R. Pierce: School, T. Khan 2. M. Jchnson 2. OTA IK A AGAIN

Public Service showed a marked improvement in spite of the fact that they were playing short. They did well to keep the score so low against their experienced opponents. Kara 5 (Misses R. Attwood 3. V. Courtney 2) defeated High School 1 (Miss N. Finlayson).
Kara were well on form in the first half, the score being 4 —o at half-time. Play was more even in the second spcil, with some excellent saves by the High School goalkeeper, Miss A. Shepherd.
