U.S. Atomic Plant Is Obsolete
(Rec. 12.30.) WASHINGTON. June 13. The United States Atomic Energy Commission considers half of its 2,000.000,000 dollars’ worth of plants and equipment to be obsolete because of startling improvements in processes. This information was published today by the House of Representatives appropriations committee, which recently took evidence from officials of the commission.
The officials testified that if atomic energy for commercial use is developed in the next 10 to 15 years it is unlikely to supplant all other forms of power, but may keep their costs down.
The field where the commercial use of atomic energy can begin appears to be in the production and utilisation of radio-active isotopes-
The commission is planning new or extended plants in various parts of the United States.
