Maintenance Of Maunu Cemetey

Financial assistance towards the maintenance of the Maunu Cemetery was sought by the Whangarei Borough Council from the County Council In a letter received at yesterday's meeting of the County Council the town clerk (Mr L. O. Hall) stated that the borough council’s health committee had recommended that the county council be approached for a linaneial contribution towards .the maintenance costs of the Maunu Cemtery. Those costs averaged £8 a week and should not be confused with the costs of burial, which were entirely borne by those requiring the performance of the service.

An examination of the cemetery register disclosed that 303 burials had taken place at Maunu during the year and of these 75 were described as having their late residence in the county.

Judging by these figures the town clerk suggested that the council might considered bearing 25 per cent of the total cost of maintenance. It appeared to the health committee of the borough council, stated the letter, that the county council did not iself maintain a cemetery for the burial of dead.

The county 'clerk (Mr G. H. Lloyd) reported there were 12 cemeteries in the county administered by trustees and the council had contributed to some of the maintenance costs. On the motion of the chairman (Cr J. Morrison) the council decided to make no grant.
