Flowers...

Roses are giving of their best this winter. Last week, as I was passing the Parnell rose gardens. I noted that the show of bloom was surprising. Some varieties did not flower so well last October and November, i’hen the weather was windy and cold. This accounts for the mass of bloom now. I Winter roses are particularly valu (able at this season, as they keep well in the cool weather. A light prunling and manuring in March is desirable for winter blooms. Choose, order, land plant roses now while you-pan see | the colours of the flowers. Also cuttings may be planted. Pruning is best j left until July.! Rose gardens are I gaining in popularity. | Plant hardy trees and shrubs, j Loosen the roots, and thoroughly pre'pare the ground before planting. Sharpen tools. Paint stakes and 'boxes. Make new labels, and label j plants. ! Be careful not to o verve e'er ferns ■and pot plants during the winter ! months. Plant roots are resting at this j season and do not absorb much mois- ■ Lire. I Dahlias, and other tubers, also ! corins and bulbs that have been I lifted, should be dusted with arsenate j of lead and flowers of sulphur to keep j posts and diseases away, j Make garden paths and repair old i paths. Trim hnrdv hedges and plant I now hedges. j Fork over the ground among I annuals. There is little growth just now, and only early Iceland poppies, etc., are flowering.
