Monks Rise In Revolt
(Rec. 2.30 p.m.) NANKING, June 13. Dispatches from Chungking report that trouble in Tibet began when Chinese military authorities arrested a Buddhist leader and, according to reports, put him to death. Monks of important monasteries which virtually rule the major portion of Tibet then staged an armed rebellion against Chinese authority. > Fighting is reported to be occurring near Lhasa. The monks are described as proBritish, while non-monastic groups favoured the Chinese. Government reports say that aircraft bearing the Soviet red star continue to bomb and strafe Chinese positions in the Petashan region of Sinkiang Province, but Russians officially deny this. The Mongolians have sent reinforcements to Peitashnn.
