Dairy Association To Study Local Market
TO investigate the ramifications of the local marketing system for butter, a special committee was set up by the Northland Dairy Association at its annual conterence at Whangarei yesterday. , .... This step was taken after the Auckland manager ot the internal Marketing Division (Mr A. 11. Honey field) had addressed the conference on aspects of marketing.
He gave a fu!i and frank insight into the history of butter marketing in New Zealand during the past 10 years, dealing particularly with the situation r.s il affected Northland butter. The committee which will comprise the association's executive members--Messrs E. G. Appleton. D. A. Finlayson and J. Hay—and two members of the secretariat. Messrs Ellis and L. A. Macintosh, will meet officers of the IMD monthly. Questions relating to the marketing of butter will be discussed and the committee will report to the association on any points of particular interest. ‘ * Ministerial approval of the scheme will be sought but it. is anticipated that no difficulties will be encountered in this connection. The committee will operate in an advisory capacity in the same manner' as other committees set up by othe: branches of primary producing organisations. The main objective of the association in adopting this scheme will be to become thoroughly conversant with
local marketing problems so that the industry in Northland will be in a strong position when local marketing becomes fully competitive on the lifting of rationing restrictions.
In his address Mr Honeyfield pointed out that the IMD was in effect responsible to the dairying industry for the local marketing of its products arid he considered the special committee acting in an advisory capacity would have much the same functions as a board of directors.
His suggestion that the formation of a Northland committee would do much to further the inletests of the industry in this province received the full support of the meeting, which unanimously resolved to take this step. Mr Honcylield. who is shortly to retire from the civil service, was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his interesting and constructive address. When the annual report of the chairman (Mr E. G. Appleton) was under discussion, there was some comment on the recent proposals for the establishment of a Dairy Commission to administer the industry.
