Mr M. S. Dempster

OBITUARY

The death occurred suddenly last week of Mr Maxwell Seaton Dempster, a veteran of the South African and Great Wars, aged 69. Borh in Edinburgh in 1878, Mr Dempster migrated at the age of nine with his parents to New Zealand where they farmed in the Opuawhanga district, being among the first settlers of that area.

At 18 years of age he joined the 9th Contingent of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles and served in the latter part of the Boer War. On his return he engaged in bush work in the King Country and Northern Wairoa. In 1905 he married Dollena Mclnnes, the youngest daughter of the late Mary and Roderick Mclnnes, and carried on their farm at Kauri until 1915 when he enlisted with the 6th Mounted Reinforcements and served in Egypt.

After his return to New Zealand hp purchased a farm at Puhipuhi, on which he lived until he recently retired to Whangarei.

He is survived by his wife, daughter, Miss Marion Dempster (Whangarei), a son, Mr Eric Dempster (Kauri), a brother, Mr J. Dempster (Whangarei), and two grandchildren.
