Dr H. B. Hawthorn, formerly of Wellington, has been appointed professor of anthropology at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. He will take up his new position next September. The post entails cooperating with the Canadian Government in the Formulation of programmes of Indian welfare as well as research work among west coast Indians. The Minister of Agriculture (Mr Cullen) left Whangarei this morning for Rawene, where he will discuss farming problems with Maori farmers before returning to Auckland by car this evening.
The deputy Mayor (Cr S. J. Snow) was welcomed-back to the Whangarei Borough Council table last night after an absence of two months in hospital with an eye injury. Cr S. J. Snow and Mr H. W. James were re-appointed by the Whangarei Borough Council last night as its representatives on the Whangarei Fire Board. No provision was made in the Local Elections and Polls Amendment Act, 1946, to alter the date of fire board elections from June to Novemger.
