Ranging And Prospects
“Mr Kchoe, the ranger, covered a lot of ground during the season and was sucessful in keeping most if the areas in order,” the report continues. “He w 7 as instrumental in bringing numerous offenders before tire council. “Mr Kehoe's attitude towards younger offenders particularly was an inspiration to all and was successful, not only in putting them on the rignt track, but in making them realise that the society exists for their own good.
“Pigeon shooters again had taken up a lot of the society’s time and, considering the lack of assistance from other organisations which should have dealt wth this question, it was probable that the ranger’s time could be better spent in other directions.
The past season was patchy. Floods on the eve of the first season upset many duck shooters’ positions and they
had to find others on the opening morning.
Some good bags were taken for the first two- week-ends, while the first two mornings produced quite a number of “limits.”
Prospects for the coming season were excellent, more ducks than for some years being in evidence. Both Californian and brown quail seemed to be on the increase everywhere.
Shooting had not thinned pukeko ranks appreciably. Because of the dry spell, fishing generally had been poor. The hatchery had closed owing to the retirement of the curator, and the incoming council would have to givesome thought as to its future.
Except for tire alteration of the bag limits for cluck and pukeko, the general conditions for 1947 licence would remain the same as 1946.
