River Debris
With the filling of Karapiro lake, the floating mass of pumice and other debris which will come down the spillway into the Waikato River will affect Hamilton’s water supply late tonight and tomorrow. Because the already overtaxed filters at the Hamilton water-pumping station will be unable to cope with the additional impurities, 5 they will be shut down until the debris has flowed down stream.
The public has been appealed to to conserve water while the filters are out of action. A rapid improvement in both the quality and quantity of the water is expected after tomorrow.
