Black Market In Meat Not Big

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The illegal sale of meat by farmers and consumers generally was not of great magnitude, said the Minister of Supply (Mr Sullivan) yesterday. He was commenting on the statement by the president of the New Zealand Master Butchers’ Federation (Mr W. S. Hughes) at Gisborne, to the effect that the rationing of meat would become ineffective unless leakages through black marketing were checked. '

"I firmly believe that the great majority of New Zealanders are seized of their responsibilities to their kith and kin in Britain in their time of dire need and would not wittingly be guilty of actively militating against our effort to render the utmost assistance,” the Minister said. The Rationing Controller rind his officers would redouble their efforts to stamp out black marketing in meat and would appreciate any assistance the butchers may be able to render in detecting such activities. Meat rationing had proved most successful in that during the three years it had been in operation approximately 76,000 tons of meat had been withdrawn from local consumption.
