Increase In Apple And Pear Prices
fP.A.) WELLINGTON. This Day. In order to assist the industry a request for an increased return for apple and pear growers during the 1947 season had been considered by the Government, said the Minister of Marketing (Mr Cullen). It had therefore been decided to allow an increase of id per lb in retail prices of apples and pears. Wages subsidies are at present operating and the subsidy which would have been necessary to meet the 1946-47 wage agreement will now be absorbed within this general increase granted tg'the industry.
The effect of this increase, the whole of which is to go to the grower, should make it possible, subject to seasonal and crop conditions, for net payments effected through the Fruit Marketing Council to be increased by approximately 1/- per case over the 1946 season realisations
This extra payment to the grower will not increase the existing monetary margins cf the present distribution channels.
