Masterton Poll On Liquor Issue
(From Our Political Correspondent) WELLINGTON, This Day
The electors of the Mastcrton licensing district ;irc to have an early opportunity of voting on the issue of tlie form in which liquor should be sold in the area.
Regulations to govern the referendum are being prepared, stated the Minister of Justice (Mr Mason) yesterday.
The poll will be taken separately in respect of two areas of the licensing district, one being the lower part centring on Mastcrton and the other the northern district of which Eketnhunn is the centre.
Questioned as to the issues which will be submitted, the Minister said that the preponderance of local opinion seemed so clear that he had no hesitation in recommending that they should be two. namely the sale of liquor by privately-owned hotels or its sale through hotels controlled by a trust representative of the inhabitants of the district.
As the result of the poll should be obtained before the opening of the session, the Government will be able to submit legislation in its early stages giving legal authority to the decisions of the electors.
