Punjab iown Set On Fire
(Rec. 10 a.m.) NEW DELHI, Mar. 6. Multan town, 150 miles west of Lahore is reported to be on fire. Troops are being flown there. It is the first time that troops have ' been sent by air to assist the civil administration. Three fresh outbreaks of violence occurred in Lahore itself. ..... Police and the military cordoned off one suburban area and fired into the air to disperse rival mobs who began shooting at each other. Police in vans fitted with loudspeakers toured the city’s streets announcing a 24-hour curfew. They cleared all roads of pedestrians and vehicles and suspended the state-owned bus service for the day. The authorities posted troops inside the walled city at affected points. Martial law may be imposed, says the British United Press correspon- N dent. A tight censorship has already been, imposed. One hundred were reported killed in Punjab riots yesterday, with a very large number injured. The Governor of Punjab (Sir Evan Jenkins) said that more fully-equipped troops were standing by ready to move anywhere.
