Finalists Not In Best Form

TENNIS

1 Special)

The intermediate tennis championship finals were decided at Stanley Street yesterday. The standard was not good and most of the finalists failed to produce their best form. J. A. Barry won the boys’ singles, beating J. E. Robson with comparative ease. Both seemed to be tired, and probably were, as they have been competing in tournaments since December 25, In the first set Barry tried to drive Iris opponent off the court, but failed tr find a length and lost the set on errors. Robson was content to play carefully.

AUCKLAND. This Day

The second set was slow, both players showing caution until Robson lapsed into errors when leading 2 —l, and Bary took five games in a row to win G—2. The final set went to 4—l in Robson’s favour before Barry suddenly struck his length and took two games to love with a series of excellent placements. The next was also won by Barry. Then, with the score at 4 —all the next game provided a great tussle, Barry winning after two deuces had been called and going on to win the match with two good shots which passed Hobson at the net.

Miss H. Redwood was not greatly extended to win the girls’ singles final in straight sets from the Whangarei girl. Miss B. Birchall. The latter appeared nervous during the first set and made many errors. With one set in hand, Miss Redwood forced the pace in the second set and Miss Birchall found the pace of her drives, particularly those directed to her backhand, too great.
