Heavy Christmas At Post Office
Christmas 1946 was busier for the Whangarei Post Office than the one preceding. Last Christmas 588 bags of mail were despatched between December 17 and 24, an increase of eight bags for the same period in 1945, while 170 bags of parcels were sent, compared with 149 bags sent in 1945.
For the same week, December 17 to 24, in 1945, the Post Office received 588 bags of mail and last Christmas the number rose to 597 bags. The increase was even bigger in the parcels, which climbed from 261 bags in 1945 to 378 bags in 1946. Fewer telegrams were forwarded and received than in 1945, for the period between December 21 and 24. In 1945, 1897 telegrams were forwarded, as compared with 1821 last Christmas, while 2687 telegrams were received for the four-day period in 1945 and for the same days in 1946 only 2384 telegrams came through. The number of telegrams transmitted shows a big increase however from 1479 sent at Christmas, 1945, to 2929 sent at Christmas, 1946. Toll calls also rose from 1952 made between December 21 and 24, 1945, to 2339 for the same number of days in 1946.
