Two Races Yesterday

Sanders Cup

(Special) AUCKLAND, This Day. Tvvc races for the Sanders Cup were decided yesterday. The first race was won by the Canterbury boat Venus, while the second was won by Diane, the Auckland boat, skippered by A. L. Willetts. Three races have now been completed of the five so far sailed in the contest. South Canterbury. Canterbury and Auckland, have each-won one race for the cup. which will be awarded to the beat first home in three races. Canterbury was unfortunate in the second race yesterday. While rounding the second to last mark her jib sheet carried away, and A. Norris, the spinnaker hand, fell into the water. He was cjuickly.back on board but the accident permitted both Auckland and Ctago . close on the Venus’ stern, to sail past, and from then cn Canterbury was not in a winning position. The second race finished with Auckland winning from Otago and Canterbury, with Wanganui. South Canterbury and Northland following in that order. Wellington broke a bobstay bolt at the start of the race and withdrew, while Northland provided plenty of excitement on one lead out to Chelsea by carrying a spinnaker which nearly put the boat over. The first race yesterday started at 10.2 a.m., and the finishing times were: Canterbury, 12h 35m 41s; Auckland, 12h 38m 50; Otago, 12h 39m 235; Wellington, I2h 40m 555; South Canterbury, 12h 41m 50s; Northland, 12h 42m Os; Wanganui 12h 47m 475. The second race of the day started at 2.40 p.m., and the finishing times were: Auckland, 4h 2m 50s; Otago, 4h 3m 295; Canterbury, 4h 3m 595; Wanganui, 4h 7m 495; South Canterbury, 4h 10m 595; Northland. 4h 11m 7s.
