Meat Prosecutions In Australia
(Rec. 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY. This Day. About 400 meat retailers are at present listed for prosecution in n drive against excessive prices in the industry, according to the Commonwealth Prices Commissioner (Mr M E. McCarthy). He f said the action was the result of the extension to theretail trade'of the drive which had been carried out with jncrasing vigour in the last few months against wholesale butchers. Yesterday only about 50 of Sydney’s 1250 butchers’ shops open. ' Mr McCarthy blamed the Butchers themselves for high carcase prices which have led to the strike. The pace had been set by certain wholesales who had been selling on ~fne blackmarket to retailers who in turn had been overcharging the public. These operators had pushed up prices of livestock to the disadvantage of the honest trader.
Newcastle unions are preparing to take strong action if the Government does hot act to end the mearTamine. They oppose any rise in meat prices and demand a fixed price for /beat on the hoof.
