Traffic Delayed For Sake Of Dog
LONDON. South-bound traffic on the Underground from The Angel station to Clapham Common was nearly 30 minutes late because of the Englishman’s proverbial consideration for animals. In this case it was for the sake of a dog, which strayed into The Angel station, got on to the railway track, and raced eight miles to Clapham Common. The dog travelled so fast that descriptions of it vary from a small white terrier ,to a greyhound. He was first sighted endeavouring to descend in a lift at The Angel station. Officials tried to prevent him but, racing past them and passengers, he leapt on to the lines just as a train was drawing in, and dashed ahead of it along the track which took him under the Thames. As the dog passed each station, a signal went ahead reporting his progress, and trains reduced speed. Stockwell station reported: “He flashed through here like Square Times” (a famo’us greyhound). Old Street signalled: “A dog went through here like, an express.” Approaching Clapham Common, the dog took a breather beside the track, and a train passed him carefully. 1 Whether he had had enough at Clapham CcTmmon or whether it was his destination is not known, but he leapt to the platform, rushefl JhrouJih the ticket barrier, and disappeared.
