Originator Of Grand National In NZ

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. It was in 1887 when Colonel H. StC. Hamersley, D. 5.0., R.A., last saw New Zealand until last night, when he and Mrs Hamersley arrived in the Rangitiki from England, bringing with them two step-children of Captain G. EversSwindell, of Lower Hutt.

Colonel Hamersley is a son of Colonel A. St G. Hamersley, who, with four others, instituted in 1870 the Grand National meeting, which has now become Grand National Week for Canterbury. He was born at Timaru and left nearly 60 years ago for the military college at Kingston, Canada. He served in the South African War and was for 30 years in the Royal Artillery. He served throughout the 1914-18 war, and later with the Disarmament Control Commission in Germany. Colonel and Mrs Hamersley expect to spend about a year in New Zealand.

Mrs Hamersley is a daughter of Mr G. H. Scales, who founded the shipping company which bears his name, and was born in Lower Hutt.
