Scrapping Planes Worth £29,000,000
(Rec. 12.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Commonwealth Disposals Commission has decided to scrap planes which originally cost £29,000,000. They comprise 523 Liberators, Kittyhawks, Venturas, Mitchells and Mariners which were obtained from the United States under. Lend Lease. The planes will be broken up and sold for the current value of the metal they contain., Fifty' Catalina • flying boats will be offered for sale to the public at £IOOO each and the first offers will be accepted. The prime cost of a Catalina is about £25,0Q0. '• ‘ ' Four Japanese ships which were the. sole survivors of the invasion fleet ;: assembled in Blanche Bay, Rabaul. for an assault on Australia, have been sold to Carpenter and Company, Pacific traders, for £ 12,000.
