WHANGAREI TOWN HALL CLOSED The Whangarei Town Hall will be closed * for renovations and painting for the next two months and the first bookings that will be taken are those for early March.’ SALE OF COUNCIL SECTION Application was made by Mrs Kate Radcliffe for the purchase of a section ■owned by the Whangarei Borough Council and situated in Radcliffe Street adjoining Mrs Radcliffe’s property. ISTREETS CLOSED During Christmas Eve, Cameron Street and the lower end of Bank Street will be closed to all vehicular traffic. This prohibition of wheeled traffic will allow for the full use of tne streets by pedestrians. If weather 'permits the streets of the borough iwill be beflagged from today until next Thursday. During this period the Christmas holidays occur and two drafts of service personnel will be returning home. Ratepayers’ Association, wrote to the borough council, but the council declined to make . such a grant. Moving that no grant be made from borough funds, Cr S. J. Snow said that if a grant were made a precedent would be set and many local organisations would seek grants from the council. “The association should stand on its own feet.” said Cr Snow. ELECTRICITY CHARGES Exception to charges made by the borough electricity department for the installation of an electric motor and ■pump was taken by the Whangarei Bowling Club in a letter received at a special meeting of the Borough Council last night. The club said that it had been led to believe that the charges made for material were retail prices plus 20 per cent and sought a reduction in the charges made. A detailed statement was tabled from the borough electrical engineer and the council decided to refer the matter to the electricity committee. KAITAIA HOSPITAL PATIENTS An average daily occupied bed rate of 28.26 at the Mangonui Public Hospital for November compared with 34,5 for the same month last year, was reported by. the secretary (Mr. W. H. Atkins) to the Mangonui Hospital Board on Thursday. With 22 patients under ’ treatment at the beginning of the month, 108 were admitted during the j period, bringing the total treated to I 130. Discharged patients totalled 108. | and' there was one death, leaving in i hospital at the end of the month 21. j The average occupied bed rate for j September was 29.27. | MOST EFFICIENT CADET 1 Winner of the gold stick for the ynost efficient non-commissioned officer in the school cadet battalions of Northland' was Regimental SergeantMajor W. Wilson, of the Whangarei High Schood cadet battalion. R.S.M. Wilson. also represented the area in the William Friar memorial Medal : competition, open to non-commission-j ed officers of school cadet battalions in the Northern military district. The gold stick was presented to R.S.M. Wilson by Colonel Conyers Brown, commander Area 3, at a parade of the cadet battalion; WATER WITHOUT METER, DECLINED A request that the council give permission for the Railway Road Services to use the water supply in the garage for the washing of vehicles, without the installation of a meter, was made to the Whangarei Borough Council at a special meeting last night. The attention of the road services had been drawn by the council to the need for such a meter installation if washing of vehicles was carried out.
