News Department Planned For United Nations
(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 19,
The United Nations Prepai’atory Commission has accepted the recomI mendations of the advisory committee for the establishment of a department of public information, under an assistant secretary-genei-al. The committee recommends that the department’s activities should be organised and directed to promote to the greatest possible extent an informed understanding of the United Nations work and purposes among the world’s peoples, primarily through the cooperation of established Governmental and non-Governmental agencies, but also by initiating positive information activites without engaging in propaganda. FOUR RECOMMENDATIONS The committee further .recommends: (1) That Press and other existing agencies of infoi’mation should be given, the fullest possible direct access to the organisation’s activities and official documentation. (2) That the depai’tment should consider the establishment of branch offices as soon as practicable. (3) That its functions should fall into the following five categories:— Press .publications, radio, films and exhibitions, public liaison and reference.
(4) That the department should provide at United Nations headquarters and branch offices services to ensure that the Press is supplied with full infoi'mation.
