Appoint New Chief Of Australian Army

CANBERRA, This Day. Lieutenant-General V. A. H. Sturdee has been appointed Chief of the General Staff, and Major-General .S. F. Rowell vice-chief. The Prime Minister (Mr Chifley) announced these appointments yesterday following the recent decision to reconstitute the Military Board in place of the Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Military Forces. Mr Chifley said the Army faced with the dual problems of demobilisation and reorganisation of the postwar forces.

“Post-war matters occupy a considerable amount of the time of the Chief of the General Staff,” said Mr Chifley, “and to afford him relief it has been decided to appoint a ViceChief of the General Staff.” Major-General Rowell, is at present Director of Tactical Investigation at the War Office. Lieutenant-General Sturdee is acting-Commander-in-Chief until the reconstitution, of the Military Board. He previously., occupied the position of Chief of the General Staff andyhas served as head of the Australian Military Mission in Washington.
