Over £258,000 Worth Of Clothes For Europe

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Garments' valued at over £250,000 have been contributed throughout New Zealand for shipment to Europe. The drive was made last month. Clothes are still arriving at depots and much sorting and packing has to be done yet. There are 2785 cases and bales packed and ready for shipment, 900 being at Wellington, 185 at Lyttelton and 1700 at Auckland. The quantities throughout New Zealand to come into the packing depots, or in the depots waiting to be packed, are not known, but. an idea of the amount may be gained from the fact that it is estimated that in Wellington there are enough clothes on hand to fill another 600 cases. The goods ; ar.e collected at the three centres mentioned for final sorting and packing. The average weight of the contents of the case is 2001 b and the average weight of the contents of a bale is 3501 b to 4001 b. Over 500,0001 b of clothing have been packed and the estimate of £250,000 is based on the supposition that the average value of a garment is 10/-, which is below that which experienced workers with sec-ond-hand clothing place on them.
