Dominion Must Buy From United Kingdom

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Day The recently-appointed representative of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board in Britain (Mr. S. A. Chisholm), formerly Director for Stabilisation, has left Auckland on his way to England. Mr. Chisholm, who succeeds Mr. R. S. Forsyth, for many years London manager of the board, will spend some time making enquiries in Canada and the United States. In an interview prior to his departure, Mr. Chilholm said that allhough there was at present an outlet for all the meat the Dominion was able to ship to Britain, a long-term contract with the United Kingdom Ministry for Food was, encouragement to Dominion farmers to maintain production at the maximum. With an assured market, it was not too early to take in hand plans for the post-war period when keen competition was sure to be resumed. “In peace-time it is necessary to carry on a very aggressive campaign in Britain to maintain the position against other meatproducing countries, and this policy cannot be relaxed,” said Mr. Chisholm. High Quality Maintained “Meat rationing and the national system of distribution is introducing New Zealand meat to many thousands who had never purchased it. and the board’s London office has evidence that the high quality of our meat has been so well maintained that there should be a wider demand than ever when conditions return to normal. “Producers are thus helping very materially in the important task of extending the demand for New Zealand meat in the United Kingdom. There is another way in which New Zealanders can help this export industry. They must realise that Britain’s economic resources have been so drained in fighting so tremendously that there will consequently be a greater insistence on the point that as Britain buys from us. we must buy from her. In other words, the slogan of every New Zealander must be ‘buy British goods.' ”
