Republicans Eschew Isolation Policy

NEW YORK. June 27

The Republican convention at Chicago unanimously adopted a foreign policy plank which stated: “We pledge prosecution of the war to total victory in full co-operation with the United Nations and all our support of our armies and maintenance of our navy under the competent and trained direction of our general staff without civilian interference. At the earliest possible time after cessation of hostilities we will bring home all members of our armed forces who have unexpired enlistments and who do not volunteer for further overseas duty. •“We declare our relentless aim is to win the war against all our enemies—(l) For our own American security and welfare. (2) To make and keep the Axis powers impotent to renew tyranny and attack. (3) For the attainment of peace and freedom based on justice and security. We shall seek to achieve such aims through organised international cooperation and not by joining a world slate. We favour responsible participation by the United States in postwar co-operation and organisation among sovereign nations to prevent military aggression and attain permanent peace with organised justice in a free world. Just Peace Treaties

“We believe, however, that peace and security do not depend upon the sanction of force alone but should prevail by virtue of reciprocal trade-, interests and spiritual values recognised in those security agreements. The peace treaties should be just. Nations which are victims of aggression should be restorerd to sovereignty and seli-governmenl. We shall, seek, in our relations with other nations. conditions calculated ro promote wond-wide economic stability, not only for the sake of the world but also to the end that our own people may enjoy a high level of employment. in an increasingly prosperous world.

“We shall keep American people informed concerning all agreements with foreign nations. In all these undertakings we favour the widest consultation cf the gallant men and women of our armed forces who have a special right to speak with authority on behalf of the security and liberty for which they fight.' Regional Organisation

Representative Joseph Martin, permanent chairman of the Republican Convention, said: “We oppose any attempts to negotiate peace or consideration of any peace terms until decisive victory is won."

Fast President Mr Herbert Hoover, addressing the convention, said: “Only by a change of Administration will returning soldiers' find freedom preset ved at home. Peace must be based on the co-operation of sovereign nations. Obviously there must be some sort of world organisation to preserve peace, but if the general assembly thereof is not to be a mere debating society it should be divided into 1 hree regions—Europe. Asia and the Western Hemisphere, with each given primary responsibility for peace in its area before calling upon a central council, especially in Europe from which the dangers of world wars come. The basis of lasting peace for America must be the friendship of nations, not the brokerage of power politics.” Domestic Platform The Tt op nil lien li convent ir.n lias adopted n. platform promising the re-establish-ment of liberty at home, the removal. ol the Oovermnen! from competition, with private industry, termination of rationing and price fixing, and other emergentw powers, broadening of the Social.
