Desperate Coal Shortage

CANBERRA, This Day Following the announcement of the desperate position of coal stocks at Melbourne, resulting in drastic rail service reductions, and the threat of a completegas “black out,” the Acting-Prime Minister (Mr. Forde) told the conference of industrial unions in Melbourne to-day that the Government would not sit down and allow coal stocks to be further depleted or production to remain below the consumption level. Mr. Forde asked miners to realise the gravity of the situation. He said that if production is not increased, the war effort would be seriously impaired, thousands of workers would lose their employment, and transport systems would be disorganised. There was no justification for stoppages such as rationing. The Government would not make discrimination in favour of the mining industry against other industries.
