The paragraph under the heading, “War Against Gorse,” published in yesterday’s edition of “The Northern Advocate” was of
WAR AGAINST GORSE
more than passing interest. In an age of science, when
new wonders are continually being flashed upon the screen of man’s achievements and of national crises which, in their ultimate analysis and impact upon home life, are in a very real sense family crises, we are apt to forget the inestimable worth of the research work done by the Cawthron Institute and similar institutes. The alarmingl yrapid rate at which gorse has taken control since the outbreak of war constitutes a very grave debit which will not be shown in the War Expenditure. County districts are not the only localities where this pest is flourishing. One notes with concern the rapidly spreading areas of gorse established in the borough of Whangarei, particularly in Lower John, James and Rathbone Streets. Timely action is needed if the Town Basin property, recently acquired for the people of Whangarei by the Borough Council, is to be saved from the inroads of this enemy of the nation.—G. L. FORD.
