Theft of a pair of shoes- and socks from a fellow employee at the Portland Cement Works barracks cost Peter Walker, liß, labourer, £5 when, he was lined for this offence by the magistrate (Air. Raymond Fernev) in the Whangarei Court veste. - - day.
Senior-Sergeant A. Henderson said that during the Easter holidays the articles had been taken from the room nex,t tc Walker’s, Who when interviewed by the police, admitted the theft. Walker was a quiet type of Maori, a good worker, and was in essential employment, said the probation officer (Mr. P. J. Norwood). Pie was not a type addicted to systematic- thieving. With a good deal of petty thieving going on at the barracks the prosecution might have . a good effect, said SeniorSergeant Henderson. Taking into account flint Walker had not been in trouble, previously, and that he was in essential .employment, the magistrate imposed a .fine of £5, -warning him that any further theft would mean; a gaol term. ; - ; -. -•-'••-•
