Many N.Z. Airmen In Stuttgart Raid

(Special) LONDON, March 20. Many New Zealanders were in the 1000 bomber raid on Stuttgart lastweek.

Flight-Sergeant C. R. Marriott, of Christchurch, was captain, and Sergeant J. H. Barton, of Southland, navigator, in a Lancaster which was attacked by a Junkers 88 while on the way to the target. The Junkers surprised them and damaged the aircraft so effectively that the inter-commu-nication telephone was put out of action, and a fire started which was put out by the mid-upper gunner. Ten minutes later they arrived safely over the target, bombed, then left for home. Flight-Sergeant Marriott had difficulty in flying the Lancaster to base, but safely. It was Marriott’s and Barton’s fifth raid. Squadron-Leader Denis Miller, D.F.C.. of Auckland, also bombed Stuttgart on his 44th operation. He said: There were more fighters than usual for that part of the country. We saw quite a lot of .combats, but were not attacked ourselves. Strong fires were burning in Stuttgart as we left.”
