90 P.C. Of S. Wales Miners Back At Work

(Rec. 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, March 16. The South Wales Miners’ Federation has estimated that 90 per cent, of the strikers have resumed work, leaving 10,000 still striking. The Press Association says that more miners are returning to work daily. Ccfly one pit is now idle in the Rhondda Valley. The National Executive of the Mineworkers’ Federation has decided to accept the principle of the Government proposals for a new wage system for the mining industry. The Minister for Fuel and Power (Major Lioyd George) said today that the situation was very much better.

When the executive of the Mineworkers’ Federation met ki London today to consider South Wales reaction to the Government proposals for stabilisation of wages until 1948, it accepted, in principle, the Government’s proposals for the coalmining industry. In a statement the president (Will Lawther) said there ought to be no reason why a settlement should not be reached next week.
