Britain Has Bold Reconstruction Plan

(Received 1.45 p.m.) (8.0. W.) RUGBY, March 14.

Lord Woolton put the Government’s reconstruction plan in a nutshell today when he described it as a “bold, deliberate policy, not only of restoration but of reform, a policy that will restore, as far as humanly possible, those conditions which made for happiness in the home and prosperity in the markets of the world, conditions which characterise the life of this country at its best.’’

Lord Woolton was addressing the American Chamber of Commerce in London. He said that the people did not want political quick tricks by way of reconstruction, but solid things that were going to last. It was Britain’s determination that life in the United Kiagdom after the war should be better than during the rather lamentable period between wars —a period which started with hopes that were so high, and reached a period of such great depression. There were mainy openings for improvements, he said, and they were resolved to secure those improvements. They did not want them for nothing, but were prepared to work for them, .He hoped that after the war we should not go back to a restrictive practices of trading, national or international, and he also hoped to see a good neighbour policy between Britain and America, just as we had within the Commonwealth of the British Empire.
