Fourth Successive Strike At Wewak
(Rec. 3 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. In the fourth successive midday strike against the Japanese base of Wewak, New Guinea, Allied bombers dropped 174 tons of bombs. The targets were Eoram aerodrome and supply areas. Smoke from, blazing fuel dumps blanketed the entire target area. Of 30 enemy fighters which intercepted, eight were destroyed, with two others probably destroyed. Rabaul again has been pounded under 88 tons of bombs. Our fighters strafed Tobera aerodrome.
General MacArthur’s communique today makes no mention of enemy ah’ opposition at Rabaul. An attack on a new objective, Tadji aerodrome, at Aitape, New Guinea, also is reported by the latest Southwest Pacific headquarters communique. Nearly 70 tons of explosives were dropped, destroying parked aircraft and severely damaging a runway. In Mintjim Valley, Australian advance elements, driving towards the Japanese staging base at Bogadjim, have passed through Saipa and Yokopi villages and are now nearing Daumoina. This is the terminus of the motor road from Bogadjim, by which enemy forces in Ihe Finisterre Ranges have been supplied.
