Raging Peat Fires In Cambridge Area
(P.A.) CAMBRIDGE, This Day. Swamp peat fires which are raging over hundreds of acres of the vast Monavale swamp in the Cambridge district, have been burning for days. On Saturday afternoon and Sunday, fanned by a stiff breeze, they became dangerous in the parallel road area, pastures and haystacks on at least two farms are in danger, and beaters had to be employed to prevent the spread of fires. At one stage on Sunday afternoon, flames sweeping right across the main Cambridge-Te Awamutu road, made it impossible to pass for a while. So far no farm houses are in danger, though fires are approaching close in several instances. It has not yet been necessary to call out territorials in camp here. Heavy rain is badly needed.
