Record August Imports To New Zealand

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Imports were again at an exceptionally high level in August, the total value being £10,818,000, exceeding those in any other August during the war period. Exports were £6,493.000, the highest for that month in the past five years,, leaving an excess of imports over exports of £4,325,000. Following is a comparison of the returns

for August in the past five years:—

* Excess of exports. A reversal in the wartime trade trend is strikingly shown in the returns for the past eight months. For the first time imports exceed exports, the unfavourable balance being £18,778,000. Imports during the period totalled £64,411,000, nearly double those for the corresponding period last year. Exports showed a drop from £57,824,000 to £45,633,000. The following table compares the periods of eight months ended August 31 in

the past five years:—

Rugby.—The New Zealand Sei’vices team drew with the Wasps three all in a somewhat ragged game. Flying-Officer Eric Grant scored New Zealand’s sole try with a fine dash down the wing.
