New Records Made At Otamatea Bull Sale

Values at the 11th annual bull sale of the Otamatea Jersey Club, held at Paparoa on Monday, showed a small decline on last year’s prices, but were in keeping avith prices at recent bull sales held in Northland. Of the 74 animals catalogued. 72 came forward. Of these 58 were sold at an average price of 24j guineas, compared with last year's average of 25 guineas and the 1841 figure of 24'. guineas.

Twenty-four yearlings averaged 26 guineas, 29 two-year-olds averaged 22'. guineas, while the three three-year-olds averaged 17 guineas each. One four-year-old brought 221 guineas, and one six-year-old bull realised 55 guineas. Steady rain that set in soon after the start of the sale and continued for nearly two hours did not assist the bidding which was inclined to be spasmodic in the early stages of the sale, but livened up considerably as the auction proceeded. A feature of the sale was that yearling bulls were in strong demand and any likely sorts brought keen bidding. On the other hand two-year-olds were not so popular and were hard to quit, even (when put on the market at a low figure. Total realisation from the sale was 1406 guineas compared with 1025 guineas in 1942.

Top Price to M. Maras

Top price for the sale was realised by Mr. M. Maras, of Huarau, Maungaturoto, when he sold the yearling, Midcllemore Bonny Prince to Mr. J. R. Dodd, of Mititai, for 60 guineas. Mr. Maras also received 55 guineas from Mr. W. L. Malcolm, of Maungaturoto, for the six-year-old Middlemore Royal Bob.

Not only was the total realisation a record, but the number of bulls sold was also the highest in the history of the club.

In keeping with the other aspects the crowd that assembled was the largest that has ever attended the club’s sales and augurs well for future attendances iwhen the petrol position becomes normal once more.

The sale was conducted by the following: Messrs. North Auckland Farmers’ Co-op., Ltd., Wright, Stephenson & Co., Ltd., New Zealand Loan & Mercantile Co., Ltd., and Dalgety & Co., Ltd.
