KAITAIA KAIKOHE DARGAVILLE WARKWORTH AUCKLAND FROM OUR DEPARTMENT we mention these — The “N.A.F. MILKER” Well - known throughout Northland for its Quality and Efficiency. Nothing is spared on this machine to make it “THE MILKING MACHINE’’ FARM IMPLEMENTS and TRACTORS Sole Northland Agents for “ MASSE Y-H ARRIS” COY, of CANADA Famous line of Implements. T>UILT on the goodwill of its shareholders and clients, the North Auckland Farmers’ Co-op., Ltd., will complete its 41st year of service to Northland with the opening of modern new premises for its Whangarei Head Office. Entirely co-operatively owned, the firm is truly part and parcel of the province’s agricultural and mercantile life; it has shared the ups, and helped to cushion the downs of primary producers, and has contributed materially to advancing the general well-being—-especially of the man on the land. Thus it has fulfilled the conceptions of a meeting held at Warkworth on May 6. 1903, when the formation of the “Auckland Farmers’ Union.’’ as it was then named, was decided upon. The chairman. Mr. C. H. C'linkard (later to become Rotorua’s M.P.), with Messrs W. H. Martin, J. H. Snook, W. H. Jackman. James Drinnan and Rodney Coates, comprised the provisional directorate. The premises and auctioneering business of Mr. Snook at Helensville were acquired as first headquarters. Commencing capital was £3000; today £97.179 has been fully paid up by 2200 shareholders. Coni rolled by farmers possessing intimate knowledge of Northland’s conditions, and operated in the interests of producers, the firm met with a ready response and soon deputations waited on the directors seeking establishment of saleyards and’ regular auctions. The earliest recorded request of this- nature came from Paparoa district. The growing ramifications of the company caused Maungaturoto to be selected for shareholders’ meetings, although the board met at Auckland. From 13 nominations for the directorate at the first election on November 4. 1903. Messrs. R. Coates, Clinkard, Maurice Harding, J. H. Wilson, Angus Finlayson, T. Coates and J. H. Snook were chosen. Earnings in the first year were £B6O and assets £2614. For the year ended June 30 last, on a turnover approaching £1,000,000, the earnings were £56.481, while assets now exceed £165,000. In 1904 Mr. R. Coates became chairman. Since then Ihe following have occupied the position: Messrs. H. T. Smith (1905). Angus Finlayson (1906), Maurice Harding (1907), Donald Finlayson (1913), Alfred E. Harding (1914), Maurice Harding (1917), J. W. McAulay (1926), G. H. Masfen (1940 to date). Mr. Joseph Mackie was appointed secretary in 1906, retiring in 1928, when Mr. W. A. Christiansen was appointed. Acquisition in December, 1906, of the well-established auctioneering firm of Wakelin. Crane and Co. was a momentous step, giving an immediate connection throughout the middle North. The registered office was iocated in the “Horse Market,” Bank Street, Whangarei. Mr. A. R. Crane became managing director, being succeeded in 1917 by Mr. Arthur Holmes and in 1925 by the present principal executive, Mr. T. Mitchell. In 1915 the name was changed from the “Auckland Farmers’ Union” to the “North Auckland Farmers’ Co-opera-live Ltd.” Anticipating by 20 years what was to become the mercantile centre of Whangarei, the directors in 1919 bought the present valuable property of three acres, with frontages to Railway Road, Walton Street and Albert Street. Here offices were erected and, in 1921. commodious concrete stores built, for. to meet the requirements of clients, merchandise and other departments had been added to what primarily had been a live stock and station concern. By building up a big import trade and discriminating buying within New Zealand, the company today has attained such a position that its custom merits the opening’ ol the most modern general store. Monday's visitors may well recall those other days when servants of the company rode great distances in all weathers over roads little more than a morass, to keep faith with clients, furnish a market for their stock, or place small orders for the every-day necessities of the backblock settler That conditions- are so much .better in the North today is due largely to such men, and to the far-sighted Farmers’ Co-operative which sent I hem forth. Money-making has never been paramount with the North Auckland Farmers’; rather has it aimed to assist shareholders and clients by financing and providing stock and farm essentials at reasonable cost. Lacking such an institution Northland’s advancement would have been much delayed, and today, when it shares in the prosperity which it helped creaio, it deserves well of those whose servant it lias been for 41 years.
