I was highly amused to read in. the “Northern Advocate” of September 27 a statement by Mr H. F. Guy at a

THE BAY ELECTION

supper party in Mr Smith’s honour at Kai~ kohe, that since the time of Mr Allan Bell

the Bay of Islands felt itself out in the v/ildnerness until now, when Mr Smith was able to bring home victory. It would be hard to imagine a more ridiculous statement. Had Mr Guy said the Bay had been brought out of the wilderness since the time of Mr Bell he would have been nearer the mark, as anyone who remembers the atrocious roads and conditions generally in the North will wholeheartedly agree.

On the same occasion, Mr Smith in a speech of thanks to those assembled, said, inter alia: ‘‘l will do what I can for the electorate outside altogether of party politics.” Certainly' we have had a surfeit of party politics during the campaign just ended, when we were treated to “the Land Bill,” ad nauseum, until one really began to wonder if there were any farmers who had eyes to read and intelligence to understand a straightforward piece oi legislation.

No one has worked harder for the Bay during his term of five years in Parliament than our late member, Mr C. W. Boswell. A man of outstancfing principles and integrity he has always endeavoured to do his utmost for ail sections Of the community, in his eagerness to be absolutely impai’tial even perhaps giving a more ready ear to those who were his opponents than to his own supporters, as numerous Well-known organisations and individuals could testify, were they to give credit where credit is due.— “STAUNCH LABOUR SUPPORTER.”
