Appeal Board Reviews Cases In Whangarei

A short sitting of the No. I Armed Forces Appeal Board was held in Whangarei today to deal with cases mostly due for review. The board comprises 'Messrs R. Coates (chairman), A. J. Magee; N. Horrobin. and R. Gray (secretary). Mr James Ace (Mr Ross) carrier, of Whangarei. appealed for Joseph A. Dunn. George T. Ace and Ronald J. Ace, transport drivers. Evidence was given by R. J. Ace, who said that he and his brother had taken over the business formerly conducted by their father.. -Six trucks were used and five drivers employed, (lie work being cartage of general goods and fuel and in contracting for the Public Works Department. All the appeals were adjourned sine die. Left Essential Work A single man, aged 20, Leslie T. Lang, farm hand, was appealed for by Mrs M. E. Turtill, for whom evidence was given by a neighbour. Mr S. R. Rabson, who said that production last year on the farm of 164 acres at Tauraroa had been 71G01bs butterfat (from 35 cows. One of her three sons had been killed in action, one was a prisoner of war and another had been invalided home, being employed in the boot trade in Auckland. Cross-examined, Lang said he had kit a Rotorua district timber mill bei'ore he had been released no objection being raised. He had twice been manpowered out of the army for hay-making. Sine die adjournment was granted. Graded II William H. Gwyn, a volunteer for the air force (Mr A. C. Lamb), said he was a contractor with timber and bulldozer, as well as agricultural machinery, and had been engaged on defence work. Extension of leave until October 14 was recommended. Medical GradingIn an appeal on his own behalf, Alfred L. Longlands, 20, single, said he had been sick and was not at present working. While working at Kamo Collieries Ltd., the appeal of which had been withdrawn, he had had a serious illness, but he considered that, if medically fit to go back to work, he was still an employee in an essential industry. He was prepared to stand by the board’s decision. Members of the board held that Longlands should go before a medical board and decision was reserved. Withdrawal from the air force for six months of Anthony L. W. Lilley, 19, was sought by Mrs. L. H. Lilley, who said that there were two farms, at Ruatangata and Mangakahia, and production last season had been 63001b5. butterfat from 40 cows, while pigs and cattle also had been raised. The air force opposed release and the Whangarei Primary Production Council supported the application. It was decided to recommend leave until March 1. The Australian Mutual Provident Society appealed for its Whangarei district manager, Colin F. Waugh, it being stated that he was responsible for the whole of the society’s activities in the area. The society had released all Grade I. men it could possibly snare and retention of Waugh was asked. Adjournment sine die was granted. Transport WorkIn an appeal for Trevor L. Nordstrand and David Hannam, blacksmith’s apprentice and motor body builder respectively. Mr. E. L. Whimp, for Messrs. James and Whimp, Whangarei, said that both men had been released for service for army work. Both were anxious to gel back into the services, but, without their help, necessary work could not be done, the position ' consistently deteriorating. Hannam said that he had now turned 21 and wished to return to the forces. The appeal for Hannam was dismissed, conditional on his not being called bei'ore December 1, while that for Nordstrand was adjourned sine die. Applying for the release oi Leslie H. Ogle, Mr. W. H. Val lance said he was commencing in business as a local body contractor and he could give full employment to Ogle, an experienced man, who had just returned to the army after being released for defence work. Release from the air force of Ernest H. Symonds, 20, was sought by Mr. H. Symonds, farmer, of Maunu, who produced medical evidence to show that he was incapable of continuing the farm work himself. The farm was of 207 acres at Poroti. with 21 acres at Maunu. At Maunu pedigree sheep were being run, while at Poroti a sharemilker last year milked 110 cows for a production of 30,0001b5. butterfat, while 130 cows were to come in this season. He wanted his son to return home to replace him in managing the properties. No action was taken.
