High Winds, Variable Weather For September

- High winds, accompanied by excessive rain and variable temperatures did much to make gardening and farming difficult in Northland, last month. Due to the excessive rains, pasture is nearly at a standstill, but it is the opinion of many farmers that a week of uninterrupted warm summer sunshine would balance the effect of the rain and restore growth to normal. Failing on 18 days in the month, the rain recorded totalled 7.oGins., the heaviest fall being 1.71 in on September 15. High winds have destroyed many fruit blossoms, and cold days alternating with warm have made growth difficult For the 24 hours before .3 a.m. today -76 in of rain were registered. Auckland’s Unpleasant Month Squally conditions have prevailed in Auckland in the past two days and there is little sign of a return to pleasant spring conditions experienced earlier m the week, says a special telegram. Three days were without sunshine and the total sunshine of 192 hours 36 minutes was 29 hours 54 minutes less than the total in September last year. Generally, weather conditions throughout the month were those usually experienced in September. Winds moderate in force and variable in direction rose to gale force on two days, and thunder, lightning and hail occurred on three days. September was the wettest oi any month in Marlborough for over 40 years. Rainfall ranged from seven to nine inches.
