Otamatea Abolishes Riding Accounts
(Special) PAPAROA, This Day. With little discussion the Otamatea County Council decided on Wednesday that as from April 1. 11)44. ail riding accounts iwithin the county shall be abolished. In moving tho necessary resolution. Cr. A. V. Page (Toka Toka) said he did not think that the innovation would be detrimental to the county as a whole. Any difficulties could always be overcome as they arose. Cr. D. Leslie (Kaiwaka) seconded the motion which was carried unanimously.
On the motion of Cr. T. H. C. Snelling (Wairau) it was decided to ensure that as far as possible riding funds over a period of years should be expended within the riding where they are collected. Assistance of M.P.s Sought
A finance report submitted by Ihe county clerk (Mr. E. G. Aickin) showed a credit balance of £6585.
Riding balances were as follows: Marcrclu, £571; Paparoa, £592; Wairau. £805; Whakapirau, £1202; Tokatoka, £059: Ruawai, £1093; Matnkohe, £952: Kaiwaka, £732.
Mr. R. ,T. Bnff (county engineer) submitted a list of subsidies received from the P.W.D., totalling £2205. for expenditure on main highways. Mr. EafT said ho had applied for £0092 and would shortly be interviewing Mr. Langbein, engineer to the Main Highways Board, in Whangarei with reference to a further consideration of the council’s application. Councillors decided to forward a list of all county roads requiring expenditure to bring them up to a good standard, to the Northland M.P.s, seeking' their co-oper-ation in securing a higher grant. Roads in the county were deteriorating to a marked degree and the council will be faced with heavy expenditure in (he future to bring them back to a good standard.
Repairs to the Awaroa bridge had been completed, reported Mr. Baff, and it was expected that repairs to the Cutter bridge at Pahi would be completed in the near future.
Mareretu Self-help
It was decided lo forward a letter of appreciation to .several settlers in the Mareretu riding who had. at great inconvenience to themselves, turned out to assist in the reoairs to three roads in the Mareretu riding.
