Little Change Indicated In Licensing Poll

Kaipara

With considerable returns yet to come, the true position of the licensing poll as far as analysis is concerned is difficult to estimate. Figures to date indicate little change in the public choice between Continuance, State Purchase and Control, and Prohibition. To date only 377,000 votes have been recorded, compared with over 630,000 in 1938, but the division of the issues is comparable on those returns received. . Results of polls held since 1919 are as follows: — 1919 National Continuance 241251 State Purchase and Control .... 3426 1 National Prohibition 270250 1922 National Continuance 282669 State Purchase and Control .... 35727 National Prohibition 300791 1925 National Continuance 299590 State Purchase and Control .... 56037 National Prohibition 319450 1928 National Continuance 374502 State Purchase and Control .... 64276 National Prohibition 294453 1935 National Continuance 521227 State Purchase and Control .... 57499 National Prohibition 243091 1938 National Continuance 376632 State Purchase and Control .... 71868 National Prohibition 182330 1943 Returns to midnight on Saturday:— National Continuance .. .. 214151.
