Won On Minority Votes

Seventeen successful candidates hold their seats on minority votes, according to the provisional count. They comprise 11 Labour Party members and six Nationalists. Several of these candidates failed tc record majority votes by slender margins, but others polled well below the combined totals of their opponents The successful candidate in the greatest minority was the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser), whose provisional score of 6212 was 1537 short of his opponents’ combined return of 7749. Others in minorities of more than 1000 are Mr. A. E. Armstrong (Labour —Napier), who was 1275 in arrear, and Mr. W. T Anderton (Labour —Eden), who was ICB7 behind his opponents. A list of the candidates who have won seats on minority votes is as follows: Labour Minority Seats Auckland East—Mr. F. W. Schramm, 6591 votes for, 7068 against, six candidates. Eden—Mr. W. T. Anderton, 6659 votes for, 7746 against, five candidates. Marlborough—Mr. E. P. Meachen, 5313 votes for. 5512 against, four candidates. Napier—Mr. A. E. Armstrong. 5050 votes for, 6325 against, three candidates. Otahuhu —Mr. C. R. Petrie, 5778 votes for, 6510 against, four candidates. Otaki—Mr. L. G. Lowry, 4621 votes for, 5333 against, four candidates. Palmerston North —Mr. J. Hodgens, 6670 votes for. 6861 againsh three candidates. Raglan—Mr. R. Coulter, 4427 votes for. 4836 against, four candidates. Roskill—Mr. A. S. Richards, 8133 votes for, 8526 against, six candidates Wairarapa—Mr. B. Roberts. 4231 votes for, 4663 against, four candidates. Wellington Central —Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, 6212 votes for. 7749 against; four candidates. National Minority Seats Hamilton—Mr. F.
